On the road with Aaltje and Bort Spakenburg
Lesson 4 - How did Aaltje get that guilder?
Lesson content:
- Students listen to part 2 of the story and complete some math tasks.
Learning objectives:
- Repetition of material covered in the circuit
- Calculating with money
- Writing a story and incorporating the knowledge gained into it
Time:
- 60 minutes
Supplies:
- Story part 2
- Silver guilder from the suitcase
- Worksheet 2
- Paper
Preparation:
- Copy worksheet 2 for each student
1. Discuss the visit with the children afterward
You will read part 2 of the story. Briefly discuss the story with the students. Look at the silver guilder. A discussion will now follow about the value of money then and now. You can use the following comparisons:
| Jet's father's weekly income | f 10,00 | € 4,54 | € 340,00 | f 750,00 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milk | f 0,08 | € 0,04 | € 0,82 | f 1,80 |
| Worst | f 0,20 | € 0,09 | € 1,35 | f 3,00 |
| Brood | f 0,60 | € 0,27 | € 1,15 | f 2,50 |
| Pair of trousers | f 3,00 | € 1,36 | € 34,00 | f 75,00 |
Discuss with the children what you could buy for a guilder today. The euro conversion table can help. In math class, the students will calculate what Aaltje could buy for a guilder in 1910.
2. Calculate
- Hand out worksheet 2 to the children
- The children will do the arithmetic sums on this worksheet
Possible instructions for the sums:
- Problem 1. Provide instruction based on experience with number line calculations and thousands. Using the timeline in the classroom makes it more concrete.
- Sum 2. Self-explanatory.
- Sum 3. Self-explanatory.
3. Closing
The children are asked to write the ending of the story.
The central question is: What does Aaltje do with the guilder?
Thanks to the previous arithmetic lesson, they have some idea of what you could buy for a guilder.
